Lingam, K. 2024. Echoes of melting blue. MAPh: PHOTO 2024.

1. Content arising from verbal supplements and artist statement

There is an artist’s statement next to the photograph installation. It gives a detailed introduction about information of the artist and background. At the same time, some texts of this statement have influenced my interpretation of the work. For example, at first, I thought the author just wanted to express the magnificent beauty of Iceland’s glaciers. However, the statement said, “Lingam. K’s photographic installation reflects on current ecological changes and attempts to evoke a reflective and transformative response (Connor 2024)”. Then I realised that this work was about environmental and climate issues. Therefore, I think that artist’s statements and verbal supplements will change our perception of the work to a large extent. It is an important way for the artist to communicate with their audience.

2. Content arising from the scale of the artwork

According to my measurements, the length of the artwork is about 2.9 metres and the width is about 1.6 metres. Therefore, when I stand in front of this work, I feel a sense of oppression. But it fits the content and ideas of the project. In terms of content, it’s a glacier, so the large display size fits my imagination of the artwork. Ideologically, the large size is striking and makes it easier for me to feel a sense of crisis from environmental issues. Thus, as we can see from this artwork, the scale will also affect the work’s expressiveness to some extent.

3. Content arising from the temporal duration of the artwork

In this work, the author’s subject is a glacier. To some extent, It can be said that glaciers represent time. And cyanotype happens to be a printing method that can be preserved for a century. Therefore, cyanotype can be integrated very well with the content of the artwork. This gives the artwork both content and form in the dimension of time. The longer this artwork exists, the more the feeling of time can be felt. At the same time, the viewer can more easily feel the relationship between time and the natural environment.
